Call of Duty 3 Review [Wii]

Call of Duty, a reputable franchise if there ever was one. Renowned for brilliant World War II first person shooters that push the boundaries of the genre to new levels and leaves the others in the dust. Call of Duty 3 is no exception, on the Xbox 360 it is one of the most graphically impressive games on the console, running at full 720p at a super crisp 60fps. Demonstrating the full prowess of the Xbox 360 as a next-gen console. But the Xbox 360 isn't the only place to experience this franchise this year, the Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii both offer there helpings of the WWII shooter and this review will focus on the latter. Call of Duty 3 on the Nintendo Wii is easily one of the better launch titles for the system and gives true meaning to the well spoken cliche, "It's the game play not the graphics."

Graphics
As expected, the Wii's inferior power (as a games console) means that the C.O.D.3 on the Wii will not live up to it's 360 cousin's amazing graphics. However, they get the job done. They are crisp, they are good and they do allow the player to make the crucial shots at the crucial moments. Of course, I am currently rocking a composite connection on a 720p HDTV so the graphics aren't as crisp as they would be on a 480p EDTV with component connections, but with PAL it's bearable, and of course I take this into account when rating the graphics. However I am still impressed and the fact that the ALL the particle effects of the game on the 360 version are present on the Wii version brings the graphics rating up to an impressive, 6.6/10.

Game play & Controls
The game play and controls are brought to life by the impressive use of the Nintendo Wiis incredibly innovative controller and game play mechanics. Treyarch have utilized the full capabilities of the Wii controller, it's aiming capabilities, and the motion sensing abilities. The aiming is obviously used to aim your gun, point it at the screen and pull the B trigger to shoot, simple and clean. However in the first few minutes of play, it feels incredibly clumsy which could potentially put some off but finish the first stage of the level and you'll soon be racing through the rest of the level and the game. One thing that strikes me about the control and aiming system is that it feels a lot more real. Seeing your gun moving on screen as you aim and the way you sometimes think to yourself as you shoot, "if I miss this shot I'm stuffed" makes the game feel more realistic to play then the PS3 and 360 counterparts. The motion sensing is used for melee combat, and fittingly too. Thrust forward with the Wii remote to melee attack a foe in regular shooting combat, however down on the d-pad also activates this as sometime you're aim can be thrown off by the thrust and of course then your foe beats you down. Rifle wrestling is also done using the Wii remotes motion sensing, and following the on-screen instructions as best as create a strange satisfaction when you finally knock the enemy down and hold his gun in your hand looking over his dead body knowing you acted out the motion for the character to succeed. I am very impressed with the controls and the game play, so I will give controls an 8.5, as they are still to be perfected, and game play a 9 as it is very fun after you get used to it and is easily a very usable, pick up and play scheme.

Now with the final verdict for all the elements of the game, time for the conclusion. Call of Duty 3 is a fantastic game to play, but not necessarily to look at. However they are more than bearable and easily one of the better looking Wii launch game, providing you can get your hands on the elusive component cables for your HDTV. This game leaves my review with a very impressive 8.1/10. Well worth it, even if you have COD3 for the 360 or PS3 and especially if you enjoyed them.

Zelda Retrospective Pt 6

A little late but it is here, Zelda Retrospective 6 is a great one and really delves into the history of Hyrule. Most of it is believable and my own theories as a Zelda fan agree.

Good on you gametrailers.com.

Anyway besides from that I'm really looking forward to the job it self, great rate of pay and excellent perks of the job. Really looking forward to it, wish me luck.

Zelda Retrospective Part 2

Unfortunately this will shadow the Weekly update but it has to be done. Zelda Retrospective Part 2. This one is about Zelda Links Awakening and A Link to the Past.

Enjoy.

GIA Weekly Update XV

Due to technical difficulties the GIA Weekly Update XV will be posted on this here blog this week.

What’s that, a weekly update from Nathan...never! That’s right you lucky people today you get to read an update written by me, instead of that fool with a pirate in his picture. Unfortunately because I have been away for a few days I am unsure what number update we are on so I am officially saying this is the 15th (V) one. I had some sort of revelation over the weekend that made me want to make the most of Games in Action so I am planning on being a lot more active and working on and finishing certain projects, mainly to do with the Interactive Media committee that I and David have started. We plan on delivering some very good stuff in the future, some will be interactive, and others will just be media. But all will be very fun and worthwhile. I promise. One of the things I am really looking forward to is the interactive story we are planning right now. It should be interesting and very fun.
Judging by this thread many of us on this site are internet addicts. Which is very good and bad at the same time, but we all know how cool we are so it doesn't matter. On a related note, I am sad to inform you that one of the founders of Games in Action and a good friend has decided he has had enough of the online world. Goldhawk has told us that he does not want to be online a lot anymore as it is getting in the way of his real life. It’s sad to see him go but I am sure he will be checking back every now and then to see what’s going on. And I am sure everyone on this site wishes him the best of luck with whatever he does and hopes he gets what he wants from life.
It seems the forums haven't been as active as usual the past few weeks. Maybe it’s got something to do with many of our members going back to work and school after the summer holidays. Whatever it is hopefully soon our forums will be flooded with all you lovely people again. I managed to catch two staff members of the site and interview them this week. So here is the first interview with Mark (rugby_rox):

Ok rugby_rox, could you explain who you are and how you became part of the GIA team?
I’m me...but on a more detailed level...My name is Mark Collins, I’m Canadian. And yeah I joined GIA around the time when it first started...Nathan blackmailed me into it. By blackmail I mean 'convinced'...I am a part time drummer, gamer and Aspiring/amateur filmmaker. I love doing stuff with film...no not that kind of stuff...and comedy rocks.

Right, so can you tell us what you do at GIA?
I’m am a moderator on games in action and head of the cinematography committee...I also post all the periods you see around, but mostly I just reply to people's threads and make sure they aren't causing massive emotional damage to anyone (flaming).

There doesn't seem to be much trouble on Games in Action. Do you think the small community is fun?
Yeppers...but we need some more motivation and communication going on. But yeah it’s a great group of guys and gals who want to have fun and be mature? While being gamers...oh so contradictory in that sentence.

So all in all you’re glad I "blackmailed" you to come here?
Oh hell yeah.

That’s good to know. So head of cinematography, what does that entail and are you working on anything right now?
It entails using Xbox live and/or other means to make promo videos or machinima films for Games in Action. what we are working on is considered top secret and classified unless your in on it...for now its classified.

Top secret, I see. Well I'm glad to hear something’s being worked on. Do you see GIA expanding in the coming months and hopefully growing?
Yes I do. Provided we can work together and stuff like that, but I definitely see it growing to become a major part of the gaming community. I think eventually it will become a unified community and not just a primarily Xbox oriented community. All we need is enough pie and enough free pens to go around and all will know we are serious.

I take it you have your name down for one of those fab pens. I know that we have had our ups and downs lately, especially to do with the website. I, more than most at GIA probably feel it more as it is my baby. But are you confident when the site goes up it will attract new members?
oh yeah...the biggest thing GIA needs is something that the community can see and say 'oh these guys do crazy stuff like that all the time' the swat tournament was our biggest challenge but worked amazingly well to get new members. Events will keep people coming and eventually they'll stay for the long run...and join our super sexy ranks

I just this second got some good news regarding the site (not the forums) that a new team has been hired to design the template. Hopefully soon we will have a site. So on a completely different note what kind of music you into?
SLIPKNOT BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Metal is the best kind of music around...but not all metal...basically I like slipknot (cause their (sic)), mudvayne, godsmack, disturbed and stuff like that.

I believe I introduced you to Slipknot a while back. Glad I got you addicted =) We already know you are a Halo fan but what other games are favorites of yours?
The new dawn of war game is sic. I play mostly halo 2 online right now, and I play dawn of war dark crusade...but that's about it. when I get a 360 though...well its plain to see what games ill be playing Gears will turn and war will begin (come on its that obvious) but yes I’m a major fan of the halo universe and take it very personally (it may sound weird but then again so does most stuff I say and yes u did introduce me to slipknot for which I am very grateful

Any one particular game you are looking forward to?
FEAR. I've wanted to play this game for so long, ever since I first saw PANICs, a rvb style spoof of fear by Rooster Teeth, but I am very much looking forward to beating you online in this Nathan...oh and the campaign looks sic as well...besides fear though it would be Halo 3.

You wish. Anyway that’s about that, unless there is anything you would liek to add?
For all those who are part of GIA or want to be part of GIA: I HAVE YOUR FLAG...besides that: stay (sic) maggots!

Thanks for the interview, I appreciate it Mark.
Your welcome Nathan, anytime.

The second interview is with our news editor TwilightWolf 77. The interview is in the following post, due to character limit issues:
So TwilightWolf, would you like to introduce yourself and tell us a little about you?
Sure, my name is David Clarke, a.k.a. TwilightWolf 77 from Xbox Live and GIA. To describe me I would say I can be a nice guy, however I have a short fuse and a big temper which can be annoying but it's getting better, anyone who's played Halo 2 online with me will know what I'm talking about.

Your title says News Editor, what exactly do you do?
To describe my role at GIA, I am the News Editor, that means (in my case) that I post the latest and greatest news from the world of gaming in the unlocked forum and to try and make sure that it's up to date and accurate. And with the help of my News Committee team of Johnrap, Matt Parker 116 and ladydie we usually achieve that. I have recently been promoted to the Interim Director of the....Committee however there isn't that much more work than I was doing before as just before I got promoted Johnrap and I were discussing it anyway. So the transition was seamless and efficient, just the signs of a good team I guess.

Sounds good. I of course know that I and you are working on another project, namely Interactive Media. Tell us, are you looking forward to get some stuff going from this area?
As a matter of fact I am, I am looking forward to seeing how the group progresses with different content and how users react to various choices and content we make. I am particularly looking forward to a series of videos I am putting together, namely the, fittingly titled, 'Wiiview Videos'. These are a set of videos detailing all you need to know about the Wii, hopefully an un-boxing video how-to setup video if necessary, and a review video, plus gameplay of a few games as well. Hopefully just to show people GIA means business with this interactive media and to tempt people into buying this unique system. But thats enough sweet talk about the Wii. We're working on the interactive story which is a cool idea, I have yet to round up the final minds behind it but when I do it'll be worth it.

Sounds very interesting and fun. I personally can't wait to start on the interactive story we are planning, but enough of that. Right now are there any games you a really looking forward to?
Yeah, as you may have guessed from that, Zelda Twilight Princess. It's one of my big games for 2006 and I really can't wait to see how the control system uniquely changes the gameplay experience. Other than that, I'm looking forward to Gears of War, Epics big 360 exclusive is looking fantastic. There's Crackdown, Banjo-Kazooie, Forza 2, Fable 2, GTA IV and of course, no one with a 360 can write a list of games they're looking forward to without mentioning Halo 3. I'm a little unsure about Halo Wars however Ensemble are smart guys and they can do the job, if not, I doubt RTS will ever be big on consoles.

Hopefully they will do a good job, but it could be make or break for RTS games on consoles. You said Zelda Twilight Princess, which is one game I can't wait to get my hands on, my favorite game of all time has to be Zelda: Ocarina of Time. What’s yours?
Oh I'm going to have to agree with you on that one, Zelda Ocarina of Time, paired with Zelda Majoras Mask are reasons enough for me to shut off the world for a couple of hours any day. I'm currently replaying them just now, I dug out my old N64 and set it up on my old 14" tube telly and sat for about three hours just exploring the first three dungeons. Those two games hold many fond memories of my childhood and I can't wait to see what they turn out like on the Virtual Console of the Wii.

One of the gaming worlds masterpieces without a doubt. Well I told Mark earlier that I had just received some good news about the site. A new team has been hired to design the template and site (not the forums). What’s your take on this?
That's good news, hopefully the new team will be able to do us proud and come up with a good template, I won't comment on past teams we've hired for this job though, I just hope this team delivers. Is there any actual news about when the site will be up?

As soon as the team finishes their designs, this could be tomorrow or a few weeks. But it should be soon. I am also told that a lot of changes will come soon to the site and forums. Are you looking forward to Games in Action Volume 2?
Yeah I am, not that I don't like what we have now, but it could be a welcome change to the GIA group. I just hope that when it is finished we can post news with pictures and links without having to edit the post several times first. It'd be nice to finally have a homepage though, when a random person stumbles onto GIA then they must be really confused, with a homepage it'd be easier for them to take that extra few seconds to figure everything out and who to speak to. But don't get me wrong that’s not a complaint about the current layout just my view on what a few people may think upon their first visit.

Well thats about that, unless there is anything else you would like to add?
Not really, just a thank you for taking this time out to interview me for GIA. Hope to see you all online soon.

And thank you for letting me interview you. Much appreciated.

That’s about it for this week. Keep your eyes peeled for future events and projects and hopefully Games in Action will be looking a lot nice in the coming weeks. Until then, see you later =)
